I stumbled upon this comment over at Digby’s blog from one Graham Firchlis, and its an eye-opening one:
This compound ethic of religious fundamentalism, bigotry and an eagerness for self-abnegation is what drove poor whites in the Old South to fight and die for the Confederacy. It wasn’t because they were doing so much better than black slaves. They weren’t, by any measure except personal freedom.
What those poor whites cherished was the institutional superiority they had over blacks. The meanest, poorest, most foolish white could force any black to step aside on a sidewalk, and that petty sense of superiority was all a poor white had to keep him - or her - from the horror of realistic self-appraisal.
But bigoted conservative Bible-thumping poor white trash aren’t limited to the South any longer. They did as they had intended to do, spread out through the mid-West and Far West as far as Alaska, but they didn’t have the spread of slavery to help them continue to force public displays of their inherent superiority. Thus their perpetual air of being offended and oppressed, because certain people don’t keep to their place.
They’ve been fighting increased social equitability the whole time, and the civil rights legislation of the 60’s mobilized them to concerted action. The Republican Party provided them an ideological home and a political tool, through which they could project their need for the illusion of superiority however it might harm them individually. They are the Republican Party.
A black man in the White House is an affront too far, a direct challenge to their notion that blacks should in all ways be their inferiors, and so they have turned out in droves to kick Obama back to the curb where he belongs and the black-loving Democrats with him.
The feckless modern Left, kicking Obama for its own self-damaging reasons, because in their minds he isn’t acting uppity enough, have become as good an ally as the white trash Bible-thumpers could hope for.
Something else Graham didn’t explain: how wealthy southern interests continuously pitted poor whites against their black counterparts to prevent any chance of the two coming together in a common interest, one that would hurt the profit-making abilities of wealthy southerners. The false belief of black inferiority also created further justification for slave-holding, as it was widely believed that blacks would be helpless without white “help” and justification for socioeconomic segregation from mainstream America.
Oh, and BTW, it’s “Game On!” for our favorite slimy post-coital substance, Santorum!
Shame about these ladies. So attractive, yet so dumb…
Previously, ThinkProgress has reported that 50 companies requested their advertising be pulled from the Rush Limbaugh show following his sexist attacks on Sandra Fluke. The publication of the memo adds an additional 91 companies to the list of companies that have dropped Limbaugh…
Keeping the Think Progress correction in mind, that brings the tally of companies that walked away from Limbaugh’s nationally syndicated talk radio show to 140. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
A 24-year-old Michigan woman wins $1,000,000 from the state lotto. Not big news in itself, except for one thing:
A Michigan woman who won a $1-million lottery jackpot last fall admits she’s continued to collect $200 a month in public assistance. That’s not all: The 24-year-old also says she deserves the financial aid because she’s now saddled with expenses related to two houses.
Gasp! How dare that “welfare queen” continue to suck up our precious resources (that could be directed towards a much worthier cause).
Rather than collect her winnings in annual installments, Clayton opted to receive a lump sum payout of $500,000 last September. She used a portion of that money to buy herself a new car and, for some reason, to increase the number of homes she already had by one hundred percent. She paid for both car and house in cash.
Depending on the type of home she bought, it may very well be a prudent investment if she plans to sell or rent the other home. Houses haven’t been the “in” thing since the subprime bubble collapsed and people found themselves being thrown out of their homes left and right.
Then again, she may wind up losing one or both if she can’t keep up with the property taxes. No word on how much she paid for the house.
Meanwhile, some people are so upset over this woman having her cake and eating it that they’re prepared to make sure nothing like this ever happens, damn how many people it’ll inevitably screw over in the process:
A member of the state House of Representatives is now sponsoring a bill that would require lottery winners to have their eligibility for public assistance re-assessed if they received prize amounts greater than $1,000.
Let’s be clear, folks. $1,000 isn’t a lot of money. For me, that’s barely two months’ rent, or a month’s rent plus monthly bills & expenses. Because a woman who won $500k after taxes is still drawing a welfare check, conservatives are ready to drop the hammer on people who win a small amount of money on a scratch-off card while drawing public assistance. Because the people drawing it aren’t supposed to have jack shit while “sucking the government teat.”
This woman did not “strike it rich,” and having two houses does not make you well-off. Fortunate, perhaps, but it’s not the sign of wealth that it once was.
"Hate to defend #RushLimbaugh but he apologized, liberals looking bad not accepting," Maher tweeted. "Also hate intimidation by sponsor pullout."
I see where the Field’s coming from. This sort of pussy-ass bipartisanship is what emboldens conservatives to behave with increased vigor and viciousness. Keep in mind this man’s words:
"What does it say about the college co-ed Sandra Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex, what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps."
And his “apology?” Saying “I’m sorry what I said offended you” is not the same as saying “I’m sorry for saying [add words here].” The latter implies genuine remorse and ownership of what’s been said, while the former is a string of weasel words formulated to take one’s self off the hook.
Meanwhile, the man with the golden EIB microphone is officially in “Haters Gonna Hate" mode:
"Limbaugh told his listeners today that "everything’s cool," noting that many of the advertisers that have yanked their support are local and thus have little if any impact on the show’s revenues. "Nobody is losing money here, including us, in all this," Limbaugh said on his radio show Wednesday.
"[The advertisers] are not canceling the business on our stations. They’re just saying they don’t want their spots to appear in my show. We don’t get any revenue from ‘em anyway. The whole effort is to dispirit you." The conservative commentator estimated that as many as 18,000 companies could be advertising on any one of the 600 or so stations that broadcast his three-hour radio program."
Which leads me to believe that the best way to send a message to this man is to have as many radio stations as possible pull his show offtheairwaves.
The gun operates based on the concept of delayed auditory feedback. An attached microphone picks up the sound being made by the target and plays it back 0.2 seconds later. The effect is incredibly confusing to the human brain, making it all but impossible to talk or hold a conversation.
The device doesn’t cause the person it’s being used on any physical harm — it simply messes with their head. When the human brain hears its own speech perfectly in sync during normal speech, it easily processes the input and allows you to largely ignore the sound of your own voice. However, by offsetting the response just a bit, the brain hears your mouth speaking as well as the strange echo effect produced by the gun. This unusual combination is confusing enough to effectively shut down the part of your brain responsible for managing speech, and you fall immediately silent.
Of course, there are consequences and implications:
The free speech implications of the speech jammer are somewhat disconcerting: A protestor or speaker at a political rally could be easily silenced just for having unpopular views. Political rallies and other protest gatherings could easily be quieted by the strange gun, should law enforcement or other agencies decide to equip themselves with the technology.
A lot of people would just counteract the effects of this high-tech gun with a decidedly more low-tech solution:
Ohio Gov. John Kasich turns down federal disaster aid:
The governor said Ohio can respond to the crisis without federal help and he would not ask federal authorities to declare the region a disaster area. “I believe that we can handle this,” Kasich said while visiting a shelter for storm victims at New Richmond High School. “We’ll have down here all the assets of the state.”
The county’s Democratic Party chairman, Dave Lane, said there is no reason to wait to ask for help. He said Kasich, a Republican who has been critical of the federal government in the past, may be trying to score political points at the expense of residents.
“I question his judgment,” he said. “It would appear at first blush that he’s probably playing politics.”
Keep in mind Ohio was hit with a severe storm system that also wreaked havoc in several other states, including Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. I wouldn’t put it past him to play politics during a genuine crisis, either.
Bannon confirmed that there exists a series of tapes taken during Obama’s time at Harvard, which will be publicly released “in a week or two.” Breitbart has been “very systematic about going through this thing,” Bannon added.”
Oh goody. Will these be vids of Andy and Steve smoking weed and snorting lines out of strippers’ asscracks in a college dorm, with the heads of Obama and Bill Ayers superimposed over theirs?
